The Centre for Quality Management System (CQMS) of Jadavpur University (JU) has launched a business excellence model that aims at imparting business excellence to small and medium enterprises.

JU has identified six sectors where the model would be applicable. These areas were information technology, textile, metallurgical engineering, foundry, food and health service sectors.

JU officials said new sectors would be included in the model over the next few years. "We extend to include the education sector next year," officials said.

JU has two distinctive model for small and medium sized companies. Companies with turnover upto Rs 20 crore had one model while entities with turnover of upto Rs 250 crore had another model.

Companies would be able to implement the model based on seven checklists relating to strategic planning, leadership, top management commitment, process management, responsiveness to customers and society, use of different tools in the process and business result.

The model was announced at the third national meet on quality, environment, energy & safety management system as part of the first 'National conference on business excellence' organised by the Centre for Quality Management System.

"We intend to hold several workshops under the model that will aim at providing ways and means of implementing the model in real life and methods of getting the most of out it. Mere implementation of ISO certifications by companies which is practiced by many companies is in no way means of achieving excellence in business," said the official.

"Our model of excellence is based on a number of models which we have integrated to provide a solution that will have to be implemented through a holistic approach," he said.

Problem with ISO certification was lack of top management's commitment in implementation of the ISO guidelines and this prompted JU to develop a model.
