Finance minister Arun Jaitley, currently recuperating from respiratory infection in an isolation ward at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), is likely to join office next Monday, according to sources. However, Jaitley is likely to skip the annual meeting of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank in Washington slated for October 10-12.
The minister had been re-admitted to Max Hospital here last Monday for a respiratory infection. Having almost recovered, he was shifted to AIIMS on Sunday, where visitors are not allowed to meet him so that he does not catch the infection again. “The finance minister is likely to skip the US trip, because it is a long-haul flight and doctors might not allow him to travel so long and exert himself so much,” said a source.
Earlier, Jaitley was admitted to Max Hospital at Saket on September 1 for bariatric surgery to control diabetes. The next day, an elective laparoscopic procedure was carried out. He cleared some important files from the hospital itself.
The 61-year-old minister has been a diabetic for some years.
However, Jaitley had to skip a two-day G20 meeting of finance ministers in Australia, which began on September 20. Minister of state for finance Nirmala Sitharaman represented India at G20 finance ministers meeting.
While Jaitley has made no secret of his condition, many have expressed doubts whether his physical health would allow him to run three key ministries - finance, defence and corporate affairs - efficiently. Notably, the minister had to take a break in Parliament, when he was half-way through with his Budget speech in July. He remained seated while reading the second half of the speech.
