Polling in all the 132 booths of the constituency passed off peacefully under tight security. No untoward incident has been reported from any part of the constituency, election office sources said.

Voters were seen lining up at the booths in the constituency from morning.

Polling picked up momentum during the afternoon.

According to the election office, 39,613 male voters and 32,593 female voters exercised their franchise.

The total number of eligible voters in the constituency is 1,40,419.

The by-poll was necessitated following the death of the sitting MLA Usmangani Devdiwala on October 5.

Nine candidates are in the fray, but the key candidates are Laljibhai Parmar of BJP and Shabbir Khedawala of Congress.

Lalji Parmar is a former mayor of the city.

The withdrawal of candidature by Imtiyaz Devdiwala, son of Usmangani Devdiwala, as an independent candidate, has worked in favour of Congress.

Imtiyaz had filed his nomination as an independent candidate after Shabbir Khedawala was nominated by Congress, but later withdrew his nomination and extended support to the official Congress candidate.
