Jamnagar to host main function on R-Day

This year's main Republic Day function in the state will be held in Jamnagar, instead of the state Capital Gandhinagar.

The Jamnagar district administration is all set to organise various programmes for the Day at ward level.

Essar Oil Ltd is sponsoring an exhibition cricket match on January 23 on the Amarsinji Cricket Ground.

The government will felicitate the Test and first class cricketers of Gujarat on this occasion and a statue of Vinoo Manked is likely to be unveiled.

The first floor of the Amarsinhji cricket pavilion will be named 'Ranji Museum', which will have the photographs of Jam Ranjee and other cricketing stars of Jamnagar.

According to the programme decided by the high level committee at the state Capital, all government departments will organise exhibitions in every ward of the city and all 17 wards of the city will have cultural programmes in the evening every day starting from January 20.

As many as 450 artistes from across the state will perform during the programmes.

A cultural event will be organised on January 25 in the Palace ground here, in which 238 artistes from 15 states will take part.

The Jamnagar Municipal Corporation has geared up its machinery, repairing the city roads damaged during the heavy monsoon.

The corporation has also taken up a massive cleanliness drive in the city under the leadership of Local MLA Vasuben Trivedi.

A meeting of voluntary institutions has decided to celebrate 'Swatchhta Sankalp Parva' on the bank of Lakhota city lake.

During this programme 1,111 coconuts will be offered to God Varun as the Lakhota lake is a main source of water for the city houses.

A blood donation camp for women is organised by the Yougandhara Trust, Trivedi said.

Vasuben said various associations have come out with an idea to paint the city pink and many paint companies have come forward with discounts for painting shops and residences pink.
