Jan Morcha led by Ajay Singh, son of late Prime Minister V P Singh, today merged with the Congress.
"We are happy to announce that Jan Morcha national President Ajay Singh has decided to merge the party with the Congress," AICC General Secretary in-charge of Uttar Pradesh Digvijay Singh told reporters here.
He said the merger has been approved by party chief Sonia Gandhi and AICC General Secretary Rahul Gandhi.
Jan Morcha was earlier a part of Ram Vilas Paswan led LJP. As the Samajwadi Party contested the Fatehpur seat after it formed the Fourth Front along with RJD and LJP, Morcha President Ajay Singh contested the seat and lost the polls.
Digvijay Singh said the workers of the Jan Morcha will formally merge with the Congress on July 25 at Lucknow. He said a meeting of the UP PCC has been organised on the same date to felicitate the Congress MPs from the state.
Talking about the political roadmap of the party in the key state where the Congress won 21 seats in Lok Sabha polls, Digvijay Singh said a meeting of the PCC will be held on August 4 in which Rahul Gandhi will also participate.
