A senior journalist with an English daily was on Saturday shot dead by unidentified persons in Mumbai, the police said. Jyoti Dey was heading the crime bureau at Mid Day. Joint Police Commissioner (law & order) Rajnish Seth said he was shot dead in Hiranandani area of Powai. According to police, four persons riding on two bikes fired at him this afternoon and fled.
EDITORS GUILD CONDOLES DEATH
Condoling the death, the Editors Guild of India has demanded the Maharashtra government take immediate steps to ensure the killers were brought to justice. “The Guild deplores the law enforcement agencies’ inability to protect the life of a journalist engaged in carrying out his professional duties at great risk to himself,” president T N Ninan and secretary Coomi Kapoor said in a statement. They said initial reports suggested the crime mafia might have been behind the killing.
