The Karnataka government launched its official web portal, www.karunadu.gov.in, here on Thursday.

Developed in association with Microsoft India, the portal will provide a single window access to information and services being provided by the various state departments and citizen utilities.

Speaking to reporters during the launch, principal secretary (departments of IT, BT and, science and technology) M N Vidyashankar said the portal will reduce both time and cost of operations for users as it is easy to navigate. The portal has made extensive use of Microsoft's technologies like the .NET framework, SQL server database and SharePoint server.

Citizens can use the portal to fix up appointments with government officials, to monitor status of their files and to lodge complaints, Vidyashankar said.

This apart, the portal provides quick links to utility services like Bangalore Electricity Supply Company, Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board and the regional transport offices.

An interesting feature of the portal is that it enables government employees to create, publish and manage their own web content. Each employee will have a personal page which can be used to upload documents that can be managed in a collaborative environment.
