The workers of closed mills of Kanpur are gearing up to confront the Mayawati administration.

They had voted for the BSP in the Assembly elections after extracting a promise from the party leaders that there demands will be looked into.

They propose to stage a demonstration in Lucknow tomorrow and meet the minister for Labour Ved Ram Bhatti.

The victory of the BSP has revived the expectations of the people and they feel that if they go to Lucknow, their demands will get immediate attention.

Thus the workers of the closed mills like those of JK Cotton and LML in their meeting decided to got to Lucknow.

The workers also staged a demonstration in front of the labour commissioner's office in Kanpur where their principal demand was that a tripartite meeting should be called between the LML management, the labour department and the representative of the workers.

Secondly, when the workers should be allowed to punch their cards once or twice a month instead of doing it daily.

They also want that all workers whose mills have not been liquidated but are closed, either due to a lock-out or for other reasons, should be entitled to Employees' State Insurance scheme benefits and the pro-management policies, which have till now been pursued by the labour department and the government machinery, should be scrapped.
