Karnataka on Monday rejected the Centre's proposal to privatise weights and measures department saying it favoured retaining the department under the government control.

"Weights and measures department is a regulatory body and the government should have control over it in the interest of the common man," Karnataka minister for food and civil supplies H S Mahadeva Prasad said here.

He said plans were afoot to reorganise the department by augmenting staff strength and providing vehicles for inspection.

The government will soon deploy a mobile weigh bridge inspection unit, he added.
