Kashmir cement plant to start in April

The Khrew cement plant in Kashmir, having a capacity of 600 tonnes per day (TPD), will start its production from April next year.
 
The new cement plant in Kashmir will be set up with a cost of Rs 87.50 crore at place called Khrew. An old cement plant already exists there and J&K Cements Ltd (JKCL), a state government-owned corporation is promoting this industry in the state.
 
JKCL is providing employment to more than one thousand semi-skilled and skilled workers besides specialisd people, directly or indirectly. In addition, about 200 distributors and sub-dealers are also engaged in its cement sale production.
 
The manag ing director of the company, Arun Sharma, said the foundation stone for the new cement plant was laid on October 27, 2006 by Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad. The unit was scheduled to be completed in 24 months. But now, with the current pace of work, the project would be completed ahead of its schedule.
 
Sharma said turnover of the JKCL during the last financial year was to the tune of Rs 74.28 crore. With the consistent efforts of the workers and management it surpassed the target fixed for the period.
 
The cement production was to the tune of 154,462 tonnes and sales were 151,753 tonnes, exceeding the targets by 3.78 per cent and 1.98 per cent, respectively.
 
During the first six months of the current fiscal year, there had been an increase of 11.13 per cent in the cement production and 13.31 per cent in cement sales as compared to the corresponding period of the last year.
 
The company was taking active part in the development of Khrew area. It has contributed largely in the construction of hospital building in the area.
 
It also developed a play ground and constructed boundary wall of local girls' school.
 
The company had earmarked Rs 10 lakh in its current year's budget for taking up various development works in the locality.
