Pro-LDF and pro-BJP state employees and teachers began an indefinite strike from Monday midnight in protest against the withdrawal of the contributory pension scheme by the Kerala government from April 1, 2013.
This paralysed the working of government offices, including the secretariat, and schools as the attendance was below 40 per cent. An indefinite strike called by the private bus workers and a one-day token strike by a section of the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation worsened the situation.
Violent incidents were reported from various parts, including state capital Thiruvnananthapuram.
A section of the employees of the Kerala State Electricity Board and the Kerala Water Authority too went on a one-day strike on Tuesday in solidarity with the state government employees.
