What is the fate of veteran leader K.Karunakaran's new party, Democratic Indira Congress (DIC)? This is a crucial question to be answered in the local body elections in Kerala.

Though the DIC is not a constituent of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) it has an poll arrangement with them so that there is common poll platform for LDF and DIC in Kerala.

Will this poll arrangement transform into a new political front in Kerala or will the CPM keep away from the DIC in the assembly election? The panchayat elections will determine the next round of political realignments in Kerala.

LDF, especially the state unit of the CPM, is in a dilemma as it was the most vehement critique of K.Karunakaran, while he was in power during the Emergency and afterwards. But for the local body elections it has signed an MoU with DIC and is trying to to explain this to the public, but have failed so far.

Along with the DIC, two Kerala Congress factions, lead by R Balakrishna Pillai and T M Jacob, had also quit UDF to find a berth in LDF. Through yet another political drama MP P C Thomas had liquidated his party IFDP and joined Kerala Congress (Joseph) group and now with the LDF.

What made these leaders change their minds all of a sudden? It is quite evident that the LDF has an advantage in the next assembly elections and by doing so these leaders are reserving their berths in the cabinet.

Former irrigation minister T M Jacob had joined DIC to find a place in the LDF. But R Balakrishna Pillai, who tried to join Janata Dal and failed, is now in the queue to return to UDF.
