Kochi Metro Project gets Planning Commission's nod

Planning Commission has approved the 'Kochi Metro Project' as a Centre-state joint venture scheme, State Fisheries Minister S Sharma told the Assembly today.    

Replying to a calling attention in the Assembly on behalf of Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan, Sharma said state government wanted to implement the project on the line of Delhi Metro as a Centre-state joint venture.    

The project if implemented would ease the transportation problem in Kochi city, Sharma said replying to the calling attention to the necessity to provide basic infrastrucutre facilities and to accelerate the development programmes of the Kochi city on an integrated basis.    

Project envisages construction of elevated rail platforms on road median between Aluva and Petta in Tripunithura nearly 20 km stretch.    

Sharma said a mechanism to monitor the progress of works in the city would be formed.    

Under the JNURM programmes, a drinking water supply scheme with a total outlay of Rs 201 crore have been planned for the city.
