The Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL) is planning to expand its network by covering seven industrial hubs along the western coast of the country.

The expansion plans involve doubling and electrifying the 760 km route. Most of the industrial clusters located in the states of Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka are set to benefit from this initiative.

"The plan which is in its initial stage envisages running of more trains following an improvement in the line capacity along the various section of the route," railway sources said.

The plan will include an urgent expansion of line capacity along with improvisation so as to break long blocks, a senior railway officer said.

KRCL in its original master plan was to have 82 stations out of which only 22 were commissioned. After the business proposal comes into effect, the number of stations and trains will be increased, sources said.
