A day after two cargo vessels — MV Tiger Spring and MV Green Valley — collided near Nurpur in South 24-Parganas, the Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT) on Wednesday said that it is looking at salvaging options and has ordered a probe into the incident. Operations at the Kolkata Dock System and Haldia port, both of which are operated by KoPT, are normal, top officials said.

“The owners of both the ships have arrived and are looking at the salvaging options. However, all the shipping channels are open and we have ordered an enquiry on the incident,” said ML Meena, KoPT chairman. He said that the report on the incident will be submitted in the next two to three days.

Experts from a private agency in Mumbai are understood to have examined the vessels on Wednesday. Though both the container ships were damaged, there was no loss of life.

However, unconfirmed reports indicated that the accident could have been triggered due to a problem with the sterring mechanism of one of the ships.
