The Rs 13,000-crore Kudankulam Atomic Power Project's (KKAPP) reactor pressure vessel (RPV), considered to be the heart of the nuclear power plant, has arrived at the Tuticorin Port safely.

"When the tsunami waves hit the Indian coastline on December 26, the shipment that was flagged off at the St Petersburg Port in Russia in the first week of December was in mid-sea.The Kudankulam project officials made efforts to trace the location of the ship and found that it was near the Tuticorin Port and was unaffected as the tsunami affect would largely be unnoticed in mid-sea," SK Aggarwal, project director of KKAPP, said in a press release.

At present, unloading of the equipment from the ship at the Tuticorin Port into a barge and taking it to the jetty constructed at the Kudankulam site is taking place.

"None of the workers including the contract labourers and their families have been affected by the tsunami waves at Kudankulam. The construction and erection activities at the country's largest power installation is on schedule," Aggarwal added.

The power plant has been designed to withstand the impact of tidal waves, collision of aircraft into the buildings where the nuclear core is located, and the effects of earthquakes and cyclones.

The coastal bund made of huge concrete tetrahedral structures and boulders has already been erected where the construction activity is going on. Aggarwal made it clear that there was no possibility of any water ingression into the project site, though it was on the seashore.

The first unit of the power plant is expected to be synchronised in December 2007, and the second unit by December 2008. Both the units have a 1,000-mw capacity making them the largest power generating units in the country.

"The project officials have targeted to complete the works for synchronisation of both the units in March and September 2007 respectively," Aggarwal said. The project is being built with the technical and financial collaboration from the Russian Federation.
