Terming the prevailing political situation in the country as "unique", CPI(M) politburo member Sitaram Yechury on Wednesday said his party would continue to support the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government at the Centre as long as the alliance did not deviate from the common minimum programme. |
"The Left parties will act both as support and pressure group to the Congress-led dispensation at the Centre as long as the coalition is committed to the common minimum programme to ensure that India is ruled by a formation with secular character to strengthen the commonality that runs through our diversity," Yechury said. |

Managing a secular dispensation was both a challenge and need of the hour and a coordination committee would soon come into force as a platform to address various issues for the smooth running of the government, he said, inaugurating the photo exhibition, organised by leading Malayalam daily Malayalam Manorama, on late CPI(M) leader EK Nayanar. |

He said the Left parties' resolve to extend outside support to the UPA government at the Centre had arisen out of the "unique" political situation after the last Lok Sabha polls and added that the secular dispensation would continue in power as long as the coalition stuck to the common minimum programme. |
