Legislative Council polls on June 21

After the Bangalore’s civic polls and state-wide panchayat elections, now comes another election in the state- The biennial elections to the Karnataka Legislative Council from the graduates’ and teachers’ constituency.

The election is necessitated with the expiry of the term of four members from these four constituencies in the state. The four members whose term expires due to retirement are: P M Nadagouda (Karnataka North-West Graduates’ Constituency), K T Srikante Gowda (Karnataka South Graduates’ Constituency), G K Patil (Karnataka North-West Teachers’ Constituency) and Basavaraj Horatti (Karnataka West Teachers’ Constituency). Their terms expire on June 30.

The Election Commission has announced election to fill up the four seats in the upper house. The formal calendar of events will be announced on May 28. The last date for making nominations is June 4 and the scrunity of the nominations will take place the following day. The last date of withdrawal will be June 7.

Polling to the four seats will be held June 21. The counting of votes will follow on June 24. The election process will conclude before June 26.

With the announcement of the Council bi-ennial elections, the modal code of conduct has come into force.

According to the announcement of elections made by Mysore division regional commissioner M V Jayanthi, who is the Returning Officer for the Karnataka South Graduates’Constituency, candidates intending to contest the election should not be below 30 years of age. Only graduates registered in the electoral rolls of Mysore South Graduates’ Constituency will be eligible for voting.

The constituency comprises Mysore, Mandya, Hassan and Chamarajanagar districts. Nomination papers should be submitted to the regional commissioner.
