Jane Holl Lute of US will take over as Assistant Secretary-General for Peace-building Support in United Nations, helping countries around the world to stabilise and rebuild their economy after armed conflicts.

Lute, currently Assistant Secretary-General in the Department of Field Support (DFS) has been appointed to head the United Nations office tasked with assisting conflict torn countries around the world.

She will replace Carolyn McAskie in the new capacity, who has led the Peace-building Support Office (PBSO) since its creation in 2006.

"Her background puts her in a unique position to ensure that the PBSO will continue to grow in addressing the challenges of a convener within the UN system, drawing on development, security, political, humanitarian and human rights actors in support of the recently established Peacebuilding Commission," Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said announcing the appointment.

Lute, a United States national, joined the world body in 2003 as Assistant Secretary-General in the Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO) and oversaw the creation of DFS from 2007 until this May.
