Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) is setting up a new central laboratory at Mhape in Navi Mumbai at the cost of Rs 7.5 crore. In six months time it will start functioning.

The lab has been built to meet the increasing demand of testing and studying samples of hazardous waste materials polluting air, water and natural resources.

"Over the last decade, various environmental acts were passed by the Central and state governments to protect water, air and other natural resources from atmospheric pollution, hazardous biomedical wastes and solid waste dumped by municipalities. Because of this, there is tremendous pressure on MPCB's existing central lab in Belapur and the six regional labs, says Dilip Boralkar, secretary, MPCB.

"We have to test each sample on five counts and it takes four to five days to test and analyse them but once the new lab is in place we expect this period to reduce considerably,'' he added.
