"The illegal transporters cause many accidents in the state as they exceed their limit of passengers. Besides that, their rash driving is also the main reason for road accidents," Deputy Secretary of Transport department, J M Chavan told PTI.

"Last year the accidents were 12,500 and figures of past four years are shocking with 1.25 lakh accidents recorded in the state," he added. Chavan said, "The government wants to regularise such illegal service so that some restrictions can be implemented on them in order to avoid accidents and inconvenience to passengers."

Though the network of the ST buses is good across the state, their frequency is limited in many remote areas. So maxi cab (8 to10-seat vehicles like Sumos, Jeeps or Qualis) is the only option for the people of such areas, he said. "Currently, one lakh maxi cabs are running in the state," added Chavan.
