The Maharashtra government is worried that the state is losing out to states such as Uttar Pradesh on World Bank funding. Only nine state projects are currently being considered for funding by the Bank and other international funding agencies.
Five years ago, at any given point of time, at least 20 projects would have been under the scrutiny of the World Bank and other foreign lending agencies, a senior planning department official told Business Standard here today.
A couple of months ago, a World Bank team led by a country director visited India but bypassed Maharashtra and proceeded directly to Delhi to hold discussions on the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) which has been pending since 1983.
