The Maharashtra Economic Survey 2010-11 said the state continues to attract highest number of industrial proposals, despite rising competition from other states, and generates maximum employment.
The report said it was the favoured destination for industries because of better infrastructure, skilled human resources and stable social conditions. A total of 786 industrial projects, including FDIs with an investment of Rs 1,15,209 crore were approved and 2,25,000 people were employed during September 2009 to August 2010. During the same period, 36 projects with an investment of Rs 8,673 crore were commissioned that employed 9,458 people.
During August 1991 to August 2010, Rs 9,20,121 crore was invested by 20,484 industrial projects, including FDIs. By the end of August last year, 8,322 projects were commissioned with an investment of Rs 1,95,407 crore.
The state has also received proposals for 233 sepcial economic zones till December 2010. Of which, 143 SEZs were approved by the Central government and 63 of these were notified.
As many as 36 public information technology (IT) parks had been set up by state-run Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation and City & Industrial development Corporation. In order to encourage private sector participation to create world-class infrastructure for the IT industry, 29 new IT parks were approved in 2010-11. The total of private IT parks in Maharashtra were at 425, of which 88 IT parks are operational.
