The Jharkhand government has submitted its initial report to the Centre on the killing of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha member of Parliament Sunil Mahato. |
Mahato was killed along with two of his bodyguards and a party colleague in Bakuria town, 40 km from Jamshedpur yesterday, allegedly by Naxalites. Union Home Secretary VK Duggal briefed Home Minister Shivraj Patil about the incident. |
Meanwhile, the dawn-to-dusk Jharkhand bandh, called by the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha and supported by all major political parties in protest against the killing of Mahato, evoked a spontaneous response, with train services being badly hit. |
The bandh, which began amid tight security, was peaceful except for stray incidents of stone-pelting and road blockades at various places in the state, including Gamariah, where Mahato's residence is situated. |
Bandh supporters ransacked the reservation office at Tatanagar railway station breaking glass panes and sign boards, according to SK Ahirwar, senior divisional commercial manager, Chakradharpur division, south eastern railway. |
The squatting by JMM activists on railway tracks at different places affected the movement of eight trains, including Howrah-bound Geetanjali express, Tata-Patna express, Howrah-Barbil express and Howrah-Ispat express, Ahirwar added. |
Though roads were blocked at strategic points across the state, there was no untoward incident. "There were traffic jams at a few places in Ranchi but the bandh was incident-free," said Ranchi Senior Superintendent of Police MS Bhatia. Train services were badly hit at Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Pakur and other places while Grand Trunk Road wore a deserted look. |
