Maize prices in India up 1.1% at Rs 9,860 per tonne: USGC

Maize prices in the country rose by 1.1 per cent to Rs 9,860 per tonne last week vis-a-vis the previous week, according to a report by the US Grain Council.

"On an average, maize prices moved lower by 1.1 per cent in the market yards to Rs 9,860 per tonne," the US Grain Council's (USGC) India representative Amit Sachdev said.

He said maize prices moved downwards in major markets across the country. It went up by 3 per cent to Rs 8,950 per tonne in Andhra Pradesh, but declined by 1.07 per cent to Rs 9,893 per tonne in Karnataka.

The price of maize declined marginally by 0.8 per cent in Rajasthan to Rs 10,511 per tonne, while it went down by in 2.16 per cent to Rs 10,590 per tonne Tamil Nadu and fell by 3.8 per cent to Rs 9,426 per tonne in Uttar Pradesh.

In contrast, maize prices went up by 0.31 per cent to Rs 10,419 per tonne in Gujarat and by 1.03 per cent to Rs 10,126 per tonne in Maharashtra.

In the spot markets of Nizamabad, Karimnagar and Davangere, the prices remained stable.

The total area under maize cultivation in the current year is around seven million hectares as compared to 6.7 million hectares last year.

The total production of maize in the country in the current year is projected at around 17 million hectares.
