Mandya remained paralysed for the second day as protests over the release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu continued in the Cauvery basin area. Besides Mandya, Mysore and Chamarajanagar too continued to witness protest demonstrations for the second day on Monday.
Vehicular movement between Mysore and Bangalore via Mandya remained paralysed with farmers and other pro-Kannada activists continuing their protests by blocking traffic on the highway. KSRTC buses were off the road too. The Mysore-Shirdi express was detained for over two hours at Gejjalagere village. Protestors squatted on the tracks, ignoring the appeal by the police and continued to detain the train. Police took about 150 of them into custody. However, the villagers blocked the bus in which they were being taken and forced the police to release them. A few other trains were also detained at Mandya and Maddur by the protestors.
Villagers set up road blocks by cooking and letting their cattle on the road just as they had done on Sunday. Karnataka Rajya Rytha Sangha leader of Mandya Sunanda Jayaram was among those who led a demonstration. Besides vehicular traffic, train services were also affected between Mysore and Bangalore. Protests were also held at Krishnarajasagar (KRS) from where water began to be released from the early hours of Sunday. Section 144, which is in force, is likely to be extended further in view of the Cauvery agitation.
