Even as the economic blockade of NH 39 and NH 53 in Manipur entered the 65th day today terribly inconveniencing the people, a local committee has called for a 120-hour bandh in Jiribam sub-division of Imphal East district from October 8 demanding that Jiribam be made a full fledged revenue district.
Jiribam District Demand Committee (JDDC) said in a statement today, the bandh would cover the entire Jiribam sub-division from 6 pm of October 8. Jiribam sub-division, is about 222 km west of here.
The Sadar Hills District Demand Committee (SHDDC) demanding that Sadar Hills area in Senapati district be made a full fledged revenue had launched economic blockade of National Highway 39 (Imphal-Dimapur-Guwahati) and National Highway 53 (Imphal-Jiribam-Silchar) on August 1, which entered the 65th day.
The United Naga Council (UNC) opposing the SHDDC demand had also launched economic blockade on the same national highways on August 21.
Official reports said prices of all essential commodities have gone due to economic blockades with petrol being sold at Rs 130 per litre and diesel Rs 60 per litre in black markets.
LPG cylinder costs about Rs 1,500 per cylinder in black market and despite price hikes, these items are not available because transporters have stopped bringing it, market reports said.

Official sources said due to security problem, once or twice in a week, loaded trucks with security escort bring the essential items from outside the state particularly from Assam.
Between 300 to 400 trucks used to ply everyday along the national highways to bring in essential items before the economic blockades, officials said.
The economic blockades continue despite call from various civil organisations to the SHDDC and UNC to call of the blockades.
