The HC had directed students of all categories (general and reserved) to pay up 60 per cent of the proposed Rs 3.5 lakh fees to enroll into these medical institutions and commence the academic year, while directing the state government to appoint a retired high court judge to go into the merits of the fees hike proposal.

The government had instead approached the Supreme Court with a new found solution in consultation with the managements of these medical and dental colleges. The SC put off the hearing till October 6. However, by September 30, the deadline set by the Medical Council of India (MCI) for filling up of the medical seats would have expired.

Minister for medical education, Digvijay Khanvilkar told mediapersons today that : "We will now follow the MCI guidelines and admissions will be started. Students can procure admissions by paying 60 per cent of the fees prescribed (before the Mumbai High Court)."

Khanvilkar added that he would meet the chief minister and deputy chief minister tomorrow where a decision would be taken about facilitating the fees (60 per cent) that will now also have to be paid by the reserved (schedule caste/tribe, economically backward and other backward caste) category students.
