Medical College refuses professor's heart for tests

A government medical college here has refused to accept for patholigical tests the heart of professor HS Sabharwal, who died during violence in college union polls in Ujjain on August 26, saying that legal norms were not followed by police.

Refusing to accept the "article" (heart) as norms were not followed, the Mahatma Gandhi Medical College's Pathology Department asked the police to follow "all legal guidelines before bringing it back" for examination.

"Since the article was not properly sealed in a container and also the labels we refused to accept it and directed the concerned officials to follow all legal guidelines before bringing the article back for examination", hospital sources said today.

The article was brought by Ujjain police yesterday for examination at the Department, they said.The sources said.

The pathological report would play a crucial role in ascertaining whether the Professor died of heart attack or was beaten to death by the unruly students,

The death of Professor Sabharwal has led to a major controversy as police and the CID probing it have not yet reached at any final conclusion in the matter.
