The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is questioning members of the 2G telecom spectrum scam prosecution team to ascertain whether any of them had spoken to the accused.

After registering a preliminary enquiry against its prosecutor A K Singh and Unitech Managing Director Sanjay Chandra for their alleged conversation, CBI wants to know whether other prosecution officers compromised the case by divulging crucial details to the accused.

Under the preliminary enquiry into the case, CBI had started to “record the versions” of its prosecution team members, said a senior CBI official. The agency is verifying an audio CD relating to the conversation between Singh and Chandra. It had received the CD from an anonymous source.

CBI has already questioned Singh and Chandra in this regard. On Tuesday, CBI Director Ranjit Sinha had told the joint parliamentary committee voice samples of Chandra and Singh had been taken to conduct a forensic investigation that would determine the genuineness of the CD. He had also said prima facie, the voices seemed to be those of Chandra and Singh.

Chandra has denied meting the CBI prosecutor, as well as any conversation with him.

Meanwhile, CBI has appointed K K Goyal as prosecutor in the 2G case. In its third charge sheet in the 2G case, the agency is scheduled to present additional documents against Bharti-Vodafone on February 19.

Lawyers involved in the 2G spectrum case say there has been “no legal injury”. Had the court noticed an impact on the trial, it would have taken action, they added. Supreme Court chief prosecutor U U Lalit didn’t express any such concern during the course of the trial.
