Mumbaikars can heave a sigh of relief as they won't have to face power cuts " for a month atleast. Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) has ordered a number of measures to reduce power consumption in Mumbai like temporary disconnection, use of diesel generators and snapping power supply to neon signs & illuminated advertising billboards.

It has also asked other power utilities " Tata Power Corporation (TPC), Reliance Energy (REL) and BEST " to submit a plan for load shedding in their areas by April 2 as a standby.

MERC observed that Mumbai is likely to face demand and supply gap of around 250 " 275 mega watt (MW) in peak hours during April and May, in which case a well-thought out strategy to manage demand is prefferable to load shedding.

The commission ordered all households that consume more than 300 MW electricity a month and commercial/ industrial consumers reduce their consumption by 20 per cent.

All three power utilities in greater Mumbai area have been asked to ensure no power is supplied to neon signs, illuminated advertising boards, illuminated advertisements on bus stops, kiosks on street lights, illumination lighting for outdoor functions, public meetings, floodlighting for stadiums and buildings (including heritage structures) between 4 pm and 11 pm.

However, railways, water supply and sewerage treatment systems, telephone exchanges, defence establishments, ports, meteorological observatories, hospitals, news agencies, television offices, radio stations and airports, have been exempted from mandatory drop in consumption level or punitive action.

But even these orgnisations have been asked to strive for a reduction in their consumption level.

The commission will review of the situation in the first week of April and if consumption is reduced due to introduction of load-regulation measures or additional supply becomes available or transmission corridor is made available then the need for load shedding might not arise.

The commission has entrusted TPC with monitoring and report the overall demand-supply position in Mumbai after a month.
