The Ministry of Environment & Forests (MoEF) has accorded environmental clearance for the Kudgi Super Thermal Power Project Stage-I (3x800 Mw) of NTPC, which is being set up in Bijapur district of Karnataka. The board of directors of NTPC Limited has already cleared the investment proposal to the tune of Rs 15,166 crore for setting up the project recently.
NTPC would be awarding the main plant package and taking up other infrastructure development works of the project shortly. The company has sourced the 800 Mw units through bulk tendering process.
Kudgi Super Thermal Power is the first project to be set up in Karnataka by NTPC with a total installed capacity of 4,000 Mw. The project will have super critical boilers and latest technology. Coal requirement for this project will be met from NTPC’s own coal mine at Pakhri Barwadi in Jharkhand.
The Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB) recently handed over 1,923 acres of land required for the main plant area. Land acquisition for balance 1,600 acres is in progress.
To meet the water requirement, the Karnataka government through its water resources department has sanctioned 5.2 TMC of water per annum from Almatti Dam, which is 18 km from the project site The power to be generated from this project would be supplied to southern states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry.
