MoU signed industries create over 26,000 jobs in Orissa

Over 26,000 locals have been employed by 34 out of the 95 MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) signed companies that have begun either partial or full scale production from their projects in the state.

The local employment, which exactly stands at 26,802, represents 70.41 per cent of the total workforce employed by the 34 companies, said minister for industries and steel & mines, Raghunath Mohanty in the state assembly.

In the steel sector, 30 out of 50 MoU signed companies have gone into production and they have generated 19,129 local jobs or employment for people within the state. This represents 70.26 per cent of the total employment offered by these companies.

Surendra Mining Industries Ltd has provided 100 per cent local employment, hiring 132 people for its steel project. Similarly, other steel players like Crackers India Ltd, Deepak Steel & Power Ltd, Orissa Sponge Iron & Steels Ltd, Patnaik Steel & Alloys Ltd, Rungta Mines Ltd, Scaw Industries Ltd and Sree Metaliks Ltd have created local employment of over 90 per cent.

In the aluminium sector, Vedanta Aluminium Ltd is the lone company to have started operation, creating 4,285 jobs so far for people within the state which represents 72.35 per cent of its overall employment figure.

In the power sector, Sterlite Energy Ltd has generated 2,103 jobs for the locals, which constitutes 63.61 per cent of the total jobs created by the company.

The state government had incorporated an employment clause at the MoU level which stipulates that industries setting up their projects in the state have to reserve 90 per cent jobs for locals in the unskilled and semi-skilled category, up to 60 per cent in skilled category and 30 per cent for the supervisory and managerial cadre while giving the industries the option to fill up the post of senior executives from the open market.
