The Madhya Pradesh government today strongly opposed the commercial use of Bt brinjal and urged the central government to bar the entry of the genetically-modified (GM) crop in the market.
In a letter to Environment and Forests Minister Jairam Ramesh, state agriculture minister Ramkrishna Kusmaria said Madhya Pradesh grew as many as 250 varieties of brinjal in an area of about 16,000 hectares. These varieties, according to the minister, were safe and free from any kind of diseases.
