Sharjah has evinced keen interest in opening an NRI university in Madhya Pradesh.

"It will be a $15-million proposal. We will allot them land free of cost, and the Indian Business Processing Council will fund the project," Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Babulal Gaur told Business Standard.

"It will be a branch of Sharjah NRI University," said a government spokesperson who was part of the chief minister's delegation to Sharjah.

The university will be for the wards and children of Non-Resident Indians. "The idea is to attune them to Indian culture," said the spokesperson. "The university will have courses for the service sector instead of technical courses."

The state government has assured the Sharjah Chambers of Commerce and Industry that land worth Rs 25 crore will be acquired for the university.

"It will take hardly a year to take shape, we will acquire land for them at a place of their choice," said Ivy Miller Chahal, principal secretary (rural industries), who was part of the delegation.
