On the back of an upswing in the domestic economy and demand for air travel picking up, Mumbai Airport recorded the highest ever passenger traffic in December.
Mumbai Airport, which had lost its busiest airport tag to Delhi Airport for a while, seems to have regained its top position by carrying 2.53 million passengers in December 2009.
"Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) handled a record number of passengers in December at 2.53 million," a Mumbai International Airport (MIAL) spokesperson said.
This is the highest-ever monthly passenger traffic handled by the airport in its history, the spokesperson said, adding, "the previous highest was 2.38 million passengers in January 2008."
This is also likely to be the highest number of passengers in a month handled by any airport across the country, he said.
MIAL, which has been mandated by the government for modernising and upgrading the city's airport, is a joint venture between the GVK-SA consortium and Airports Authority of India.
