Mysore is seeking to be a ‘model solar’, ‘slum-free and ‘environmentally sustainable’ city. This, if one goes by the pronouncements made at a recent function organised to distribute state government benefits to the beneficiaries of Mysore district frucitfies.
At the function, inaugurated by Chief Minister D S Sadananda Gowda, a declaration was made to this effect.
It was also announced that Mysore would be made a flex board-free city to end the menance of indiscriminate use of banners and posters which have been marring the beauty of the heritage city.
Assurances were also held out that those without night shelter would be rehabilitated and multi-purpose co-operative societies set up for road-side vendors.
It was announced, under a new scheme the homeless in the city would be provided their own houses and Mysore would be made a ‘city of own houses’. Around 34,146 families were identified as lacking their own houses, a release from District Incharge Minister S A Ramadas said.
The chief minister launched 10 schemes of Rs 12.56 crore, laid 37 foundation stones for schemes amounting to Rs 143.96 crore, and announced 16 schemes sanctioned at a cost of Rs 58.60 crore. All these amount to a total cost of Rs 215.13 crore.

He distributed site allotment letters to 271 members of the Special Task Force of the police who had participated in anit-Veerappan operations and title deeds under ‘Ashraya’ housing scheme for 2,329 beneficiaries of the Krishnaraja Assembly constituency, the constituency represented by Ramadas.
Gowda also formally handed over 1,481 sewing machines to unemployed women, 10 computers to Mysore prison inmates, 67 sanitary inspector training certificates to the children of poura kramikas, and laptops, datacards, pendrives and emergency lights to 91 SC & ST students of Mysore Medical College.
He also launched a health insurance scheme for members of BPL families, newspaper distributors and vehicle mechanics, the release said.
