Bangalore-headquartered Narayana Hrudayalaya Institute of Cardiac Sciences will commission its Narayana Hrudayalaya Malla Reddy Hospitals, a 500-bed heart hospital here, in four months.

Narayana Hrudayalaya chairman Dr Devi Shetty said in the first phase, Rs 200 crore will be invested in the health city. The project is the largest heart hospital in the city and is coming up at Jeedimetla.

It will be scaled up to 5,000 beds on about 40-acre in five years, including a 1,000-bed centre for heart, another 1,000 beds for kidney disorders and 1,400 beds for cancer treatments.

Narayana Hrudayalaya had been planning to start a hospital in Hyderabad ever since M Malla Reddy, who runs a chain of educational institutions in and around Hyderabad, leased out a large parcel of land with buildings to the former six years ago.

The hospital will perform about 60 per cent of the cardiac surgeries for adults and the remaining will be paediatric, which will be developed as a specialty in Hyderabad.

The hospital, which has an agreement with Malaysia and Iraq to treat 1,000 and 2,500 children respectively every year, will shift some of its patients to Hyderabad.

It will also draft key specialists, paramedics and technical staff to Hyderabad from the parent institute at Bangalore apart from making fresh recruitments.

Within a few months of starting its operations, the hospital expects to do an artificial heart implant, which costs about Rs 50 lakh, for free.
