A national apex bank exclusively for agricultural and food processing sector will be formulated soon in a bid to increase the country's agro products exports, said D P Singh, secretary, ministry of Food Processing Industries. |
While addressing a seminar on Indian food processing industry organised by the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce and Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO), Singh said that though most of the states have given their consent, the contours are still under discussion. |
He added that a new integrated food law dealing with all aspects like food adulteration and safety requirements will soon be implemented and a single authority named Food Safety and Standards Authority of India will act as a regulator. |
Delivering the keynote address, A Sakthivel, chairman, FIEO, Southern region, said he was optimistic that the export level will reach new heights in the next few years with the export target for current fiscal pegged at $ 92 billion. |
He said that the exports were Rs 91,126.20 crore during FY 2005-06 which is 16.05 per cent higher than the value of exports during the previous fiscal. |

"India is the world' second largest producer of fruits and vegetables, but hardly two per cent of the produce is processed. Upgradation in infrastructure, practice and adherence to quality standards is essential for the entire foodchain -- growing of grains, vegetables and fruits, collecting, processing and packaging them. The emphasis must be on diversity, decentralisation, labour intensity and sustainability," said Sakthivel. |
