Naveen returns with big majority

The alliance, which has already bagged 50 seats out of total 147 seats, is all set to increase its tally to 89. The Congress led coalition won 29 seats and established a lead in 19 other seats . While the Communist Party of India and the Communist Party of India - Marxist won one seat each , Independent candidates won in eight seats .

The Biju Janata Dal-Bharatiya Janata Party alliance also established lead in 18 out of total 21 Lok Sabha constituencies. The Congress is leading in three Lok Sabha constituencies .

In the last Assembly elections, the Biju Janata Dal-Bharatiya Janata Party alliance had secured 106 seats and the Congress had bagged 26 seats.  Similarly in the last Lok Sabha polls , the Biju Janata Dal-Bharatiya Janata Party combine won 19 seats leaving the Congress the rest two seats .

Prominent among those who suffered defeat in the Assembly polls include former chief minister and senior Congress leader Hemanand Biswal, Finance Minister Panchanan Kanungo and Cooperation Minister Aurbonind Dhali .

Later talking to reporters,  the Biju Janata Dal-Bharatiya Janata Party combine leader and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expressed his gratitude to the electorate of Orissa for giving him a chance to serve the state for the second consecutive time .

He said the victory of the Biju Janata Dal-Bharatiya Janata Party combine reflects the satisfaction of people of state regarding various programmes of the government in the field of development , welfare and poverty alleviation .

He said that his government will continue to stress upon employment generation and development of irrigation and agriculture in the coming five years . He said that the people reposed faith in the Biju Janata Dal-Bharatiya Janata Party alliance because it provided an effective and good governance in the last four years.

The chief minister said that joint legislature party meeting of Biju Janata Dal and Bharatiya Janata Party will be held shortly to elect the leader of the combination . He said that the date for swearing in would be decided after discussing with leaders of both the parties .

On the National Democratic Alliance not faring well at the national level , he said that the picture is not yet clear and whatever is the outcome of the election will be examined by the National Democratic Alliance coordination committee at a later stage . He however made it clear that Biju Janata Dal will continue to be part of the National Democratic Alliance.

For the Lok Sabha elections, Union Minister for Tribal affairs Jual Oram was trailing behind his Congress rival Frida Topno in the Sundargarh seat initially, but won the seat later, while the Biju Janata Dal candidates and Union ministers Arjun Charan Sethi and Braja Kishore Tripathy  were leading in Bhadrak and Puri constituencies respectively.

Former Chief Minister Giridhar Gamang was leading against his nearest Biju Janata Dal rival and former judge of Orissa High Court Mutika Papanna in the Koraput seat.

In six Assembly constituencies, Independents were leading while the Samajwadi Party was ahead in one seat.
