The Union ministry of shipping has sanctioned grants under the Sagarmala Coastal Berth Scheme for Jawaharlal Nehru port (JNP) at Navi Mumbai and Karwar port in Karnataka.

The government of Karnataka will get Rs 50 crore for developing a breakwater at Karwar and JNP will get Rs 25 crore to develop a coastal berth.

The money will partially support Rs 385 crore of infrastructure projects in these ports. The one at JNP involves construction of a coastal berth and port craft jetty, reclamation and capital dredging. The estimated project cost is Rs 170 crore, to be complete by March 2019. The proposed berth is expected to handle 2.5 million tonnes of coastal traffic.

The project at Karwar involves extension of the existing southern breakwater by 145 metres and construction of a north breakwater of 1,160 metres. The estimated cost is Rs 215 crore and it is expected to be complete in three years. Karwar is situated between the New Mangaloret and Mormugao ports. It is one of the best natural all-weather ports on the west coast.
