Owning a car in Delhi will be costlier from Monday with a new road tax regime coming into effect. From midnight tonight, registration charges of vehicles levied by the Delhi government will be on the basis of price and not on weight as was the case earlier. Vehicles costing up to Rs 4 lakh will now attract an ad velorm tax of 2% while those costing more than Rs 4 lakh will be charged at the rate of 4%. The proposal for introduction of ad velorm tax regime was announced in July last year, but was approved by Lt Governor B L Joshi this week.Under the new regime, a basic Maruti 800 will attract a tax of Rs 4,000 while costlier cars like Baleno and Honda Accord would be charged up to Rs 50,000.Under the earlier system, road tax was charged on the basis of the weight of the car with the maximum charge being less than Rs 10,000. The Delhi government is expected add more than Rs 50 crore to its kitty with the implementation of the new tax regime.
