The government has decided to postpone the date of introduction of the proposed high security vehicle registration plates to June 30, 2002, in view of the requests received from various state governments asking for more time to implement the decision.
As per the new schedule, all vehicles to be registered on and after June 30, 2002 shall mandatorily have be fitted with such plates, as against an earlier deadline of September 28, 2001 set by the Union ministry of road transport and highways. For vehicles registered before June 30, 2002, a time period of two years from the June 2002 deadline will be granted for changing over to the new registration plates. As per the new format, a commercial vehicle will have yellow background with black letter plates while a non-commercial vehicle will have white background and black letters.
