In the search for a design for the Indian currency, the government of India may appoint a faculty from the National Institute of Design (NID) on its jury. To be at par with the major currencies of the world, the finance ministry had floated a competition for a symbol for the Indian rupee. While many students from NID have applied for the competition individually, the government is most likely to involve a faculty to decide the symbol for the rupee.
"Many students from NID may have applied for the competition as it is open to all. The government may call upon a faculty from NID on its jury," said NID director Pradyumna Vyas. Much like international currency symbols like the dollar, pound, yen and euro, the government aims to get international recognition to the rupee with the symbol.
The government had asked the general public to think of a design as symbol for the Indian rupee. The last date for the entries was April 15 and the selected entry could win Rs 2.5 lakhs and five shortlisted entries will get Rs 25,000 each.
According to the ministry, the symbol should represent the historical and cultural ethos of the country as widely accepted across the country. It should be applicable to standard keyboard and has to be in the Indian National Language Script or a visual representation, it further said.
