Imports of goods by suppliers, contractors and vendors appointed by the Organising Committee (OC) of the Commonwealth Games (CWG) will not be exempted from Customs duty. The finance ministry has clarified these parties will not be eligible for the benefit extended to OC in February this year.

The ministry had waived Customs and additional duty on imports of goods such as sports, fitness and communication equipment, furniture, eatables and uniforms, required for organising the Games, to held between October 3 and 14.

The exemption was given to the imports by OC, National Sports Federation, CWG Federation members, CWG associations, participating athletes, Prasar Bharati or the broadcasting rights holder.

The finance ministry said suppliers, contractors and vendors are not eligible importers under the notification that exempted goods directly imported by OC and other specified government bodies. This clarification will clear doubts of Customs officials and OC who were facing difficulties in clearing goods imported for the forthcoming Games. The Department of Revenue has also directed its filed officers to ensure speedy clearance of the consignments related to the Games, subject to observance of due procedure. To ensure that the consignment related to the event reaches on time, it has allowed clearances of imports on holidays also.
