Slamming the Union government for adopting an “ad hoc” response to strengthen the coast guard after the November 2008 (‘26/11’) terrorist strike in Mumbai, the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG), in its report, said the force was ill-equipped to meet the challenge.
In a report tabled in Parliament, the CAG said a large number of ships of the coast guard should have been decommissioned, but they had not been phased out, since their replacements had not materialised. It said though security of the coast was a major concern after the Mumbai attacks, the government failed to issue clear directions and enunciate a policy for coastal security.
