The government has denied that any members of the Lashkar-e-Toiba had infiltrated the Indian Air Force as reported in the media.

"We have thoroughly investigated the matter and found that it is not true," said Home Minister Shivraj Patil while replying to a debate on the adjournment motion brought by the Opposition on the issue of national security.

Patil also combated the Opposition's charges that enough was not being done to fight terror in India. "It is not true that we have not done enough to fight terror," he said.

He added that the government was increasing the number of central forces by around 300 battalions, to give them a deeper presence.

"Our police to citizen ratio is also low, which is why I have written to the state governments to increase the number of state police personnel," he said.

Patil said that intelligence networks were being strengthened across the board especially in states, up from the village level.

"I admit that we need better co-ordination between various agencies. The Mumbai blasts showed exemplary co-ordination between the administration and the political establishment. This has to be replicated," he said.

Earlier, initiating the motion, Leader of the Opposition L K Advani demanded that the anti-terror law POTA be brought back in the wake of the Mumbai blasts.

Advani said that in all of India's 25 years of engagement with terror, the last two years had been particularly bloody. Compared to the 2,400 people killed in terror attacks during the NDA regime, 1,360 people had been killed in the last two years alone.

"The Mumbai attacks were a carpet bombing on Mumbai's lifeline "" its train service," he said. "There appeared to be months of preparation behind the attacks which were executed with military precision," he added.

"It's all very well to talk about the spirit of Mumbai and the seeming normalcy of the situation. But if one sees, the situation is not normal after 7/11. It will be a mistake to consider it so," he said.

"The government is not strong, it is not united. The first priority of the UPA government was to finish POTA and not terror. Misuse of a law is no excuse to do away with it. If that was the case, we would have to do away with the entire IPC," he added.
