Odisha finalises Rs 124 crore green building contract

The Works department of the Odisha government has completed the process to handover a contract of constructing an energy saving building worth Rs 124 crore in state capital.

"The tendering process has been complete, but as it is awaiting approval of higher authorities, we cannot disclose the name of the winner," said an official.

However, sources indicated that leading construction firm Gammon India could have bagged the contract.

According to Works department proposal, the project is expected to be implemented in three phases on an area of 90,000 square meters. In the first phase, a massive tower of 30,000 square meters is coming up at Unit-V with a cost of Rs 124 crore. The time period for the project is estimated at two years. It will be a signature complex with a lot of green cover in an area of 8 acres of land. The structure will come up in the area opposite to the Works department building, which houses various government offices in an unplanned manner without adequate amenities such as canteen, toilets and proper parking. The project involves demolition of 50 asbestos roof rooms and 16 RCC roof rooms to make way for the proposed Green Tower.

The three star rated building will use minimum energy and will function without significant damage to the environment, said a senior official involved in the planning of the project.

The building will have all state-of-the-art features such as room for conference, canteen, toilets and elevators. Special care will be taken to make the building earthquake resistant, having fire fighting apparatus along with lightning arrester, said the official.

There will be huge parking area both at basement and level parking to accommodate vehicles in a large numbers. Construction will be taken up with modern technology and innovative architectural designs, the official said.
