Odisha targets to cultivate 3.32 mha in rabi season

The state government has set a target to cultivate 3.32 million hectares (mha) of land in the Rabi season after suffering a crop damage in Kharif cultivation due to Phailin that struck the state on October 12.

The targeted area includes 0.36 million hectares of paddy with a yield rate of 3,270 kg per hectare, 1.57 million hectare of pulses, 0.57 million hectare of oilseeds, 0.65 million hectare of vegetables and 0.105 million hectare of spices. The agriculture department targets to produce 0.79 million tonne pulses and 0.67 million tonne oil seeds during the Rabi season.

The agriculture directorate has approved Rs 465.52 crore in this financial year under different schemes. It includes state plan (Rs 225.51 crore, central plan (Rs 2.21 crore), centrally sponsored plan (Rs 10.43 crore), national food security plan (Rs 62.44 crore) and Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (Rs 164.91 crore). For Kharif 2013 season, 6.14 million hectare area was targeted for cultivation.
