During the 13th Plan Period (2017-22), nine IPPs would together generate 8,000 Mw. Ind-Barath Energy (Utkal) Ltd is expected to commission its third unit- a super critical unit of 660 Mw during this plan period, reaching its full capacity of 1,360 Mw at Sahajbahal near Jharsuguda, says data by the state government.

Other IPPs anticipated to operationalise their units in this period are those by GMR Kamalanga (350 Mw- fourth unit) at Kamalanga near Dhenkanal, Jindal India Thermal Power Ltd (600 Mw- third unit) at Derang near Angul, Maa Durga Thermal Power Ltd (60 Mw- third unit) at Tangi (Cuttack), KVK Nilachal Power Ltd (1,050 Mw) at Athagarh (Cuttack), NSL Nagapatanam Power & Infratech Ltd (1,320 Mw) at Talcher, Visaka Thermal Power Ltd (1,320 Mw) at Rairakhol (Sambalpur), CESC Ltd (1,320 Mw) at Neulapoi (Dhenkanal) and Lanco Babandh Power Ltd (1,320 Mw- third and fourth units) proposed at Khurunti (Dhenkanal).

By the end of the 12th Plan (2016-17), Ind-Barath is expected to commission its two units of 350 Mw, Maa Durga Thermal Power its first unit of 60 Mw, Monnet Power 1050 Mw (2x525) and Lanco Babandh Power two super critical units of 660 Mw each.

So far, three IPPs have put on stream their coal-fired plants in Odisha, with an installed capacity totaling to 4650 Mw. The state's share from these plants is 1,337 Mw.

By 2022, Odisha's share from all power sources- IPPs, state sector utilities, NTPC power stations (within and outside Odisha) and ultra mega power plants (UMPPs) is pegged at 8,552 Mw.

Peak power demand in the state has climbed to 4,200 Mw with average demand hovering around 3300 Mw. By 2019, peak power demand is expected to touch 5,641 Mw.
